בית הקברות הישן של תל-אביב נוסד בשנת 1902 במקום בית הקברות ביפו, בגלל מגיפת החולירע שפרצה באותה שנה (השלטון העות'מאני אסר מטעמים רפואיים לקבור את מתי המגיפה בתוך יפו). מקרה זה התאים לצורך של היישוב היהודי ביפו בבית קברות חדש; "שאלת בית העלמין ניסרה ברקיע עירנו זה כמה שנים... השיגו שכני המקום את גבולו מכל עבריו, עד כי לא נותר רק חלקה קטנה לבית הקברות, והחלקה כמעט נמלאה, וכספים לקנות בית עלמין חדש לא היה להעדה... והחכם רב פעלים שמעון רוקח... ויפעל כי הממשלה קצבה 12 דונמים לבית הקברות לעדת בני ישראל. מרבית הנקברים הם מראשוני העיר תל-אביב. בבית הקברות קיים אוסף מרתק של מצבות, מבנים, פסלים ואלמנטים עיטוריים בעלי ערך אמנותי והיסטורי, ומצנות רבות עברו תהליך של שימור. בית הקברות היה בשימוש עיקרי עד שנת 1932. The Old Cemetery of Tel Aviv The cemetery was founded in 1902 to replace the cemetery in Jaffa after a cholera plague in that year (the Ottoman government prohibited burial of plague victims in Jaffa for medical reasons). In this case, the conditions suited the need of the Jewish community in Jaffa for a new cemetery. "The question of a cemetery has painfully cut across the skies of our city for a number of years now... its neighbors have trespassed on it from every direction, to the point where only a small plot for the cemetery remains. That plot is almost full, and funds to purchase a new cemetery were not allocated... the accomplished and wise man Shimon Rokach... acted so that the government has allocated 12 dunams for a cemetery for the Jewish community" (from the newspaper Havatzelet, Vol. 6, 1902) Most of those interred in the cemetery were among the founders of the city of Tel Aviv. A fascinating collection exists from the cemetery of tombstones, structures, sculptures and decorative elements of artistic and historic value. Many tombstones have been restored. The cemetery was in use as Tel Aviv's main cemetery until-1932.
